This article details Windows configuration "tweaks" to standardize Windows look and feel, streamline remote support and enhance troubleshooting.

Windows XP is addressed specifically in this article, but the changes should be made in Windows Vista and Windows 7 accordingly. Additional documentation for these operating systems will be published as it becomes available.

Desktop and Screen Saver

Remove desktop wallpaper, set suggested desktop icons, disable Windows screen saver and power options and confirm optimal screen settings.

Right click anywhere on the desktop (but not on an icon) and left click Properties.

  • Note: If no mouse is attached, touch anywhere on the desktop (but not on an icon) and press Shift + F10 to display the menu, then select Properties.

Remove wallpaper:

  1. Select the Desktop tab.
  2. Select None as the background.
  3. Touch/Click Customize Desktop....

Set wanted icons:

  1. Click to enable icons for My Computer and My Network Places. If necessary, click to disable My Documents.
  • Note: Manually remove other icons from the desktop as appropriate. RPOWER recommends that a minimal set of icons be displayed: My Computer, My Network Places and possibly a touchscreen calibration utility and backup remote support icons are likely all that are needed.
  1. Disable Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days.
  2. Touch/Click OK.

Disable Screen Saver:

  1. Select the Screen Saver tab.
  2. At the Screen Saver drop down menu select (None).
  3. Touch/Click Apply.
  4. Touch/Click Power....

Disable power options:

  1. At the drop down menus for Turn off monitor, Turn off hard disks and System standby select Never.
  2. Touch/Click OK.
  • Note: RPOWER will manage screen saver behaviors, define them in System Setup, System Information and System Setup, Workstation Setup.

Confirm display settings:

  1. Select the Settings tab.
  2. Ensure that Screen Resolution is at its maximum (or the highest value appropriate for the workstation).
  3. Ensure that Color Quality is at its maximum.
  4. Touch/Click OK.

Taskbar and System Tray

Configure Task Bar and System Tray appearance.

Right click the clock in the system tray and left click Properties.

  1. Uncheck Group similar taskbar buttons.
  2. Uncheck Hide inactive icons.
  3. Touch/Click OK.

Windows Explorer

Configure the appearance of folders and files within Windows Explorer.

From the Windows desktop double click My Computer.

From My Computer select View from the menu...

Then select Details.

From My Computer double click Local Disk (C:).

Click and hold the Date Modified header and drag it to the left of the Size header.

Select Tools from the menu...

And then Folder Options.

  1. Ensure that Show common tasks in folders is selected.
  2. Select the View tab.
  1. Uncheck both Display simple folder view in Explorer's Folders list and Hide extensions for known file types.
  2. Click/Touch Apply to All Folders.

Click/Touch Yes at the Folders View dialog box.

Click/Touch OK to close the Folder Options window.
